REGIMENTAL THERAPY (‘ILÄJ BI’L-TADBÉR)
‘ILĀJ BI’L-TADBĪR (REGIMENTAL THERAPY)
‘Ilāj bi’l-Tadbīr (Regimental therapy) has been prominent treatment method practised by Unani physicians since ancient times. Kashmir, known for its rich history and four season climate, has long been a center for the practice of regimenal therapy. Given this legacy the council decided to emphasize regimenal therapy as a primary approach in treating pain and inflammatory diseases focussing on techniques such as Hijama (Cupping), Dalk (Massage), Takmīd (Fomentation), Irsal-i-Alaq (Leeching), Hammam (bathing) etc. At RRIUM, Srinagar special attention was given to Ilaj bi’l Tadbīr (regimenal therapy) under the guidance of Director General of CCRUM, This initiative aimed to benefit patients with various ailments and explore the potential of these therapies for treating a broader range of diseases. A total of 20826 patients were treated by different types of regimental therapies like leeching, cupping, fomentation and massage etc. at RRIUM, Srinagar till date. A brief information about various procedures are being provided to the patients at RRIUM Srinagar is below:
Hijama (cupping therapy)
Ḥijāma Bilā Shart (Dry Cupping) and Hijama Dalkiyya (Massage cupping) This method of cupping therapy, known as Ḥijāma Bilā Shart (Dry Cupping), involves applying cups to the skin without making any incisions. The vacuum created by the cups stimulates blood circulation, relieves muscle tension, and promotes relaxation. Since no blood is drawn, this technique is typically used for less severe conditions, such as muscular pain, stiffness, and localized discomfort. When a gliding movement was done on the body with the help of vacuum cups after applying a lubricant or oil then it is called Hijama Muzliqa or Dalkiyya (Massage cupping). At RRIUM, Srinagar, 16814 patients suffering from various ailments like arthritis, frozen shoulder, upper and lower back pain, and other localized pain conditions have been successfully treated using Ḥijāma Bilā 1Shart and Hijama Dalkiyya.
Ḥijāma Bil Nār (Fire Cupping)
In fire cupping, a flame is briefly introduced inside the cup before it is placed on the skin to create a stronger suction due to the vacuum created by the heat. This method also helps to improve blood flow, reduce muscle tension, and release toxins. Fire cupping is often employed for more robust therapeutic effects and in cases of chronic pain, respiratory issues, or other health concerns. 988 patients suffering from various ailments like frozen shoulder, joint pain, low backache, sciatica, etc. have been treated by Hijama Nāriyya at RRIUM, Srinagar.
Ḥijāma Bi’l Shart (Wet Cupping)
This form of cupping involves the application of cups followed by small incisions on the skin to draw out blood. The goal is to remove harmful substances, improve blood flow, and alleviate various conditions, especially those related to inflammation, pain, or toxin build-up. Wet cupping is considered more intensive and therapeutic for conditions like sciatica, migraines, and joint pain. 4000 patients suffering from various ailments have been treated by Hijama bi’l Shart at RRIUM, Srinagar.
Each type of Ḥijāma is used based on the patient's condition and the therapeutic goals of the treatment.
