The Peripheral Pharmacovigilance Centre (PPVC) at the Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine (RRIUM), Srinagar, organized an awareness program on August 28, 2024, focused on the pharmacovigilance of ASU & H (Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and Homeopathy) drugs. The event took place at the Institute of Asian Medical Science, Zakura, Srinagar, targeting B.U.M.S. students and their teachers.
Dr. Arjumand Shah, Coordinator of PPVC at RRIUM Srinagar, emphasized the importance of pharmacovigilance in ensuring the safety and efficacy of ASU & H drugs. She highlighted how pharmacovigilance acts as a safeguard in the healthcare system by monitoring and evaluating adverse drug reactions (ADRs), which is essential for protecting public health. She explained that despite the natural origin of ASU & H drugs, they are not devoid of side effects, and hence, there is a need for continuous monitoring and reporting of any adverse effects that may arise from their use
Dr. Iqra Rifat, M.D. Ilmul Advia, JRF (U), delivered a lecture titled "ASU & H Drugs and their Adverse Effects." she provided an in-depth explanation of Ayush medications, highlighting their potential side effects, and underscored the importance of pharmacovigilance within the Ayush medical systems. The session was especially valuable for the attending doctors.
A practical training session followed, where Dr. Iqra Rifat demonstrated the correct procedure for filling out the Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) reporting form, emphasizing the importance of accurate reporting.
