Awareness camp on Sickle cell Anemia under janjatiya gaurav diwas

As part of the celebration of Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas, the Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine (RRIUM), Srinagar, under the Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM), Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, organized an awareness camp on Sickle Cell Anemia at Sambal Bala, a tribal-dominated area in District Ganderbal.

The camp aimed to raise awareness about Sickle Cell Anemia, a hereditary blood disorder that significantly impacts tribal communities across India. The initiative was especially focused on educating tribal women, given their crucial role in family health and the prevention of inherited diseases. This health outreach was aligned with the Government’s mission to uplift tribal populations by providing targeted health interventions in remote and underserved areas.
The session was led by Dr. Sumera Mehfooz, Research Associate (Unani), who delivered an in-depth and informative talk on Sickle Cell Anemia. She described how the condition causes red blood cells to become abnormally shaped, resulting in various health complications such as persistent anemia, episodes of severe pain, fatigue, frequent infections, and pregnancy-related risks.
In addition to the educational session, Compound Unani Medicines were distributed to the participants as part of a nutritional support initiative. The awareness camp concluded with a strong message of community involvement, early screening, and collaborative efforts to tackle the burden of sickle cell disease in tribal areas.
