As a pre-activity for the International Day of Yoga 2026, themed “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” the Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine Srinagar organized an awareness programme under the TSP to promote the importance of yoga and healthy lifestyle practices among tribal communities.
The programme aimed to educate participants about the significant role of yoga in maintaining physical, mental, and emotional well-being throughout the ageing process. During the awareness session, Dr. Sumera Mehfooz sensitized the attendees about the benefits of regular yoga practice for healthy living, emphasizing its effectiveness in improving flexibility, balance, strength, respiratory function, stress management, and overall quality of life. She highlighted how yoga can help prevent and manage various lifestyle-related disorders and support healthy ageing by promoting holistic wellness. As part of the programme, Dr. Sumera Mehfooz also conducted a practical session on breathing exercises (Pranayama), demonstrating simple and effective techniques that participants could easily incorporate into their daily routines to enhance lung capacity, improve mental clarity, reduce stress, and promote overall health. The programme witnessed active participation from community members, who expressed keen interest in adopting yoga practices for a healthier and more active life.
