Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine (RRIUM), Srinagar is a constituent of Central Council for Resesarch in Unani Medicine, Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India, Since 1985. Over the past few decades this institute has emerged as the leading institute of the Unani medical research in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The campus houses a building which contains Clinical Department (including Opd, ipd, Labortaries, Pharmacy), SMPU (Survey of Medicinal Plant Unit), Drug Standardization Research Unit (DSRU), Administrative Block, PG Department, canteen. The campus also houses Herbal Garden and Animal House. This Institute has affliated with Univerty of Kashmir to start PG courses from the session 2016-17 in Unani Medicine for the first time in the valley. Presently institute offers PG programme in two disciplines; Moalajat (Medicine) and Ilmul Advia (Pharmacology). The Institute regularly organizes academic events like CME, Workshops, Seminars and Guest Lectures. Clinical services are provided to the patients for Skin Diseases, Hypertension, Diabetes, Obesity, GIT and Hepatobiliary Disorders, Neurological, Psychiatric and Geriatric Care. The Regimenal Therapy (Ilaj Bit Tadbeer) Centre of the hospital Provides Massage, Cupping, Leeching and Inkibab etc. facilities. Hospital also provides health care facilities to socioeconomically weaker groups at their door steps by regularly organising health camps.
The Institute has earned great fame in the state for the successful treatment of three chronic diseases- Zeequn Nafas (bronchial asthma), Waja-ul-Mufasil (rheumatoid arthritis) and Bars (vitiligo). Clinical studies carried out on these diseases at this Institute, along with other centres, has helped the Council to obtain provisional patents on three Unani drugs. The Council’s researchers working at RRIUM, Srinagar have collected a large number of medicinal plants used in Unani Medicine from different forest areas of Jammu and Kashmir. They have also been successful in the experimental cultivation of some important Unani Medicinal plants.
